Seasonal Wellness Guide
for Koh Samui
Month-by-month TCM wisdom adapted for Koh Samui's tropical climate. Discover the foods, lifestyle practices, and acupressure points that align with your body's natural rhythms.
Peak Hot Season
April
Hottest month (29-36C). Intense humidity. Songkran water festival. The body works hardest to cool itself. Risk of heat exhaustion and dehydration is high.
Organ Focus: Heart & Small Intestine
Fire Element
As extreme heat arrives, the Heart system comes under pressure. The Heart governs not just circulation but also the mind (Shen) and emotions. Heat agitates the Shen, causing restlessness, anxiety, and insomnia. The Small Intestine separates the pure from the turbid — crucial when the body is overwhelmed by heat.
Foods to Eat
Watermelon
The supreme heat-clearing fruit — cools the Heart and generates fluids
Coconut water
Naturally replenishes electrolytes and Yin fluids
Lotus seed
Calms the Heart Shen and stops night sweats
Mung bean soup
Classic TCM prescription for clearing summer heat toxins
Bitter gourd
Bitter flavor enters the Heart and drains fire
Tofu
Cooling protein that nourishes Yin without adding heat
Dragon fruit
Cooling, hydrating, and gentle on the Stomach
Foods to Avoid
Alcohol (especially beer in heat)
Creates damp-heat and further agitates Heart fire
Lamb and beef
Very warming meats that add internal fire
Excessive durian
Extremely heating and can cause nosebleeds in sensitive people
Deep-fried snacks
Generate toxic heat and deplete Yin fluids
Daily Practices
Lifestyle Recommendations
Rest during the midday heat (11am-2pm) — the Heart time in TCM's body clock is 11am-1pm
Swim in the sea: salt water is mineral-rich and the movement circulates Heart Qi
Avoid intense exercise in the heat — gentle movement only, preferably in water or shade
Practice calming breathing before sleep: inhale 4 counts, hold 4, exhale 6
