Traditional Chinese Medicine
What is acupuncture?
Acupuncture is one of the oldest healing practices in the world. It works by placing fine, sterile needles at specific points on the body to restore the natural flow of energy through your meridian pathways. When that flow is disrupted by injury, stress, poor sleep, or long hours at a desk, your body starts sending signals: pain that will not go away, muscles that stay tight no matter how much you stretch, restless nights, or a foggy head that caffeine cannot fix.
At Piraluna, Claire uses a combination of classical Chinese acupuncture and Zhu's Scalp Acupuncture to treat each patient as a whole person, not just a list of symptoms. Every session begins with a careful assessment of your pulse, tongue, and health history so the treatment plan matches your specific pattern of imbalance. The needles are hair thin, single use, and disposed of immediately after each session.
Most patients feel a deep sense of calm during treatment. Some feel warmth or a gentle tingling at the needle sites. Many fall asleep on the treatment table and wake up feeling lighter than they have in weeks. Whether you are dealing with chronic neck and shoulder pain, insomnia, digestive problems, or simply carrying too much tension, acupuncture gives your body the reset it needs.

What acupuncture can help with
These are the conditions our patients walk in with most often. If yours is not listed, get in touch. Acupuncture treats far more than most people expect.
Neck and Shoulder Pain
The most common condition we treat. Desk work, phone use, and travel leave tension locked in your upper body. Acupuncture releases the knots that stretching and massage cannot reach, often within one or two sessions.
Lower Back Pain and Sciatica
Sharp, shooting pain down your leg or a constant dull ache in your lower back. Acupuncture reduces inflammation around the affected nerves and restores blood flow to the area. Many patients notice improvement after the first treatment.
Insomnia and Sleep Problems
Trouble falling asleep, waking at 3am, or dragging yourself out of bed exhausted every morning. Acupuncture calms your nervous system and treats the root cause of poor sleep, whether that is stress, pain, or hormonal imbalance.
Stress and Anxiety
When your mind will not switch off and your body holds tension even at rest, acupuncture interrupts the cycle. It regulates your nervous system, lowers cortisol, and helps your body shift out of constant fight or flight mode.
Women's Health
Painful periods, PMS, irregular cycles, and the mood swings that come with hormonal shifts. Acupuncture works with your body's natural rhythms to ease symptoms and restore hormonal balance without medication.
Fatigue and Low Energy
Running on coffee and willpower is not sustainable. Acupuncture identifies what is depleted in your system and rebuilds it from the inside. Patients often report feeling more energy within the first few sessions.
Your First Visit
What to expect during treatment
Three stages, all in a single visit. The whole process takes about an hour.
Consultation
Claire spends 15 to 20 minutes learning about your health history, current symptoms, and what you want to improve. She checks your pulse at both wrists and looks at your tongue, two diagnostic tools that reveal patterns Western tests often miss. This assessment shapes every needle placement that follows.
Treatment
You lie comfortably while Claire places 8 to 20 fine needles at carefully selected points. The needles stay in for 20 to 40 minutes while you rest. Most patients feel deeply relaxed within the first few minutes. Some feel warmth or a gentle tingling. Many fall asleep.
After Your Session
Drink plenty of water for the rest of the day. Avoid intense exercise and alcohol. Pay attention to how your body responds over the next 24 to 48 hours. Claire will give you honest guidance on whether you need follow up sessions and how many to expect.
Common Questions
Acupuncture FAQs
Does acupuncture hurt?
Most patients feel very little. Acupuncture needles are about the thickness of a human hair, nothing like the needles used for blood draws or injections. You may feel a brief light sensation, a dull ache, or warmth when the point is activated. Many patients fall asleep during treatment.
How many sessions will I need?
A recent issue may resolve in one to three sessions. Chronic conditions that have been present for months or years typically need six to twelve sessions for lasting results. Claire will give you an honest estimate during your first visit so you know exactly what to expect.
What conditions does acupuncture treat?
Acupuncture is commonly used for neck and shoulder pain, lower back pain, sciatica, insomnia, stress and anxiety, headaches, digestive issues, menstrual problems, and fatigue. It can also support recovery from injuries and improve overall wellbeing. If your condition is not listed here, get in touch and we will let you know whether we can help.
Is acupuncture safe?
Yes. Acupuncture is extremely safe when performed by a trained practitioner. At Piraluna, every needle is sterile, single use, and disposed of immediately after treatment. Claire holds both a Bachelor's and Master's degree in Traditional Chinese Medicine from Chengdu University of TCM and has over five years of clinical experience.
Can I get acupuncture if I am pregnant?
Yes, with modifications. Certain acupuncture points are avoided during pregnancy. Always inform Claire if you are or might be pregnant so she can adjust your treatment plan. Acupuncture is widely used during pregnancy for nausea, back pain, and preparation for labor.
