Seasonal Wellness Guide for Koh Samui

Month-by-month TCM wisdom adapted for Koh Samui's tropical climate. Discover the foods, lifestyle practices, and acupressure points that align with your body's natural rhythms.

Cool Season

December

Water Element

Cool and dry (24-30C). Clear skies, low humidity, gentle breezes. The most pleasant weather of the year. Peak tourist season. Short days (relatively) encourage rest and reflection.

Organ Focus: Kidney & Bladder

Water Element

Deep Water element month. The Kidney and Bladder govern the body's water metabolism, bones, reproductive energy, and willpower. December is nature's signal to slow down, go inward, and conserve. The Bladder channel — the longest meridian in the body — runs along the entire back and governs the body's defense against cold invasion.

Foods to Eat

Lamb hot pot

Warming Yang tonic perfect for cooler evenings — builds Kidney fire

Cloves and star anise

Warm the Kidney, expel cold, and aid digestion

Chestnut and yam congee

Classic Kidney-strengthening porridge for winter wellness

Black chicken soup

Prized in TCM for nourishing Kidney Jing and blood

Longan fruit

Nourishes Heart blood and Kidney, calms the spirit

Leeks

Warm the Kidney Yang and support the lower back

Prawns

Warm the Kidney and boost Yang without excess heat

Foods to Avoid

Cold raw foods and smoothies

The body needs warmth — cold foods waste Kidney Yang

Excessive bitter foods

Bitter flavor drains heat, but in cool season you need to preserve warmth

Too much fruit juice

Cold and sweet — burdens the Spleen-Kidney axis

Daily Practices

Lifestyle Recommendations

1

Sleep early and deeply — the Kidney restores most between 5-7pm and during deep sleep cycles

2

Practice gentle back stretches and spinal rolls to keep the Bladder channel open

3

Take warm sea salt baths — salt enters the Kidney and the warmth preserves Yang

4

Reflect on the year: the Water element governs wisdom, memory, and life direction

Acupressure Point of the Month

Du 4 (Ming Men)

Location

On the lower back, on the midline of the spine, between the 2nd and 3rd lumbar vertebrae (directly behind the navel).

How to Press

Rub your palms together vigorously until hot, then place both palms over this point. Hold for 2-3 minutes. Repeat 3 times. Best done in the morning.

Benefits

The "Gate of Vitality" — the physical location of Kidney Yang fire. Warms the entire body, strengthens the lower back, boosts reproductive energy, and builds willpower.

TCM Drink of the Month

Longan & Cinnamon Winter Warmer

Recipe

Simmer 8 dried longans, 1 cinnamon stick, 2 slices ginger, and 3 red dates in 500ml water for 20 minutes. Drink warm in the evening.

Watch For

Common Conditions in December

Cold sensitivity and poor circulation

Lower back pain and stiffness in the morning

Weakened immune defense (catching holiday colds)

Low libido and reproductive issues

Fear, anxiety, and existential worry (Kidney emotion)
