The Short Answer
Acupuncture is one of the safest treatments available when it is performed by a properly trained practitioner using sterile single use needles. Serious side effects are very rare. The most common reactions are mild and short lived, such as a small bruise or a moment of lightheadedness. For the vast majority of people, acupuncture is a gentle, low risk, drug free option.
That said, safety is not automatic. It depends on training, hygiene, and good communication between you and your practitioner. Here is an honest look at what the risks actually are and how a careful clinic keeps them close to zero.
What the Side Effects Actually Are
Most people walk out of a session feeling relaxed and report nothing at all. When side effects do happen, they are usually minor and pass quickly.
- Minor bruising. A small bruise can form where a needle was placed, especially near surface blood vessels. It fades within a few days.
- A drop of blood. Occasionally a tiny spot of blood appears when a needle comes out. It is harmless and we simply dab it away.
- Lightheadedness. A few people feel briefly dizzy, usually if they arrive tired or on an empty stomach. Resting for a moment resolves it.
- Temporary tiredness or a short lived flare. Some patients feel sleepy afterward or notice symptoms shift slightly before they improve. This settles on its own.
- Mild soreness at a point. A dull ache at a needle site can linger for an hour or two, similar to light pressure.
These reactions are mild, uncommon, and self limiting. Serious complications are rare in the hands of a trained practitioner who knows anatomy and depth of insertion.
Needle Hygiene: The Single Most Important Thing
The biggest safety factor in acupuncture is the needle itself, and modern practice has made this very simple. At Piraluna we use sterile single use needles. Each needle comes from a sealed sterile package, is used once, and goes straight into a sharps container afterward. A needle is never reused on you or on anyone else.
This single use standard removes the main historical risk of acupuncture, which was infection from improperly cleaned equipment. With pre sterilised disposable needles, that concern effectively disappears. We also clean the skin before insertion and follow clear hygiene protocols throughout the session.
If you ever visit a clinic that reuses needles or cannot clearly tell you their needles are single use and sterile, that is a reason to walk out. It is the one thing you should never compromise on.
What You Should Tell Your Practitioner
Good communication is part of safe treatment. Before we begin, please let us know if any of the following apply to you.
- You are pregnant or think you might be. Acupuncture can be very helpful in pregnancy, but certain points are avoided, so we need to know.
- You take blood thinners or bruise easily. We adjust technique and point selection to minimise bruising.
- You have a bleeding disorder. This changes how we approach treatment.
- You have a pacemaker or other electrical implant. This matters only if electroacupuncture is being considered.
- You feel faint around needles or have fainted before. We can treat you lying down and keep things slow.
- Your current medications and medical conditions. A full picture lets us treat you safely and effectively.
None of these necessarily rules out acupuncture. They simply help us tailor the treatment to keep you comfortable and safe.
What Makes a Clinic Safe
Safety comes down to who is holding the needle and how they work. When you are choosing a clinic, look for these signs.
- Formal training. A practitioner with a full university degree in Traditional Chinese Medicine understands anatomy, safe insertion depth, and which points to avoid in which situations.
- Sterile single use needles. Non negotiable, as covered above.
- A proper assessment first. A careful practitioner checks your history, pulse, and tongue before placing a single needle, so treatment fits you rather than a generic formula.
- Clear communication. You should feel free to speak up at any point, and a good practitioner will adjust or remove a needle the moment something feels wrong.
